Right-sized: new DL220 wheel loader

Winter 2011

A new Doosan wheel loader fills a popular size class, particularly for state, county and municipal governments, expanding the line to 10 models. The new DL220 has a 2.9-cubic-yard capacity bucket and is ideal for a wide range of material handling tasks that include loading and transporting sand and gravel, to snow and storm debris removal.

The new DL220 falls between the current DL200 and DL250 models with product specifications that make it more competitive with other brands. They include a dump height of 9 feet 4 inches (at bucket edge in the fully dumped position) and dump reach of 3 feet 6 inches for easy truck loading, supported by a Z-bar loader linkage system.

Peak performance
Doosan wheel loaders maximize productivity by synchronizing the drive train — Doosan diesel engine and ZF automatic transmission — with the hydraulic system. Together these systems empower the loader to get more work done in less time.

A full powershift transmission with manual, automatic and semiautomatic modes is available on the DL220 — similar to all Doosan wheel loaders — for smooth operation. Optional front and rear axle limited slip differentials provide positive traction in wet or soft conditions.

Four forward speed ranges — as high as 23 mph — and three reverse speed ranges give operators their preferred speed for varying applications. The operator may also choose between standard and economy working modes for either maximum productivity or minimum fuel consumption.

The DL220 has hydraulically controlled multi-plate wet disc brakes and dual brake circuits to provide positive braking power. Brakes are self-adjusting for long life. The DL220 has a spring-applied/hydraulically released (SAHR) parking brake mounted on the front axle that engages when the engine is stopped.

Fuel savings
Hydraulically driven variable-speed cooling fans have electronic thermostats that continuously monitor engine coolant and transmission oil temperatures. As the engine cooling needs diminish, the variable-speed fan slows to minimize fuel consumption. Fan direction can be momentarily reversed by the operator from the cab to quickly clean dirt and dust buildup from the cooling system.

Additional fuel savings are realized through improved communication between the engine and transmission controller.

Comfortable cab
Operators have exceptional all-around visibility from the DL220 cabin. The roomy cab has low sound levels, a powerful heating and air conditioning system, tilting/telescoping steering column, hydraulic power steering and a comfortable seat equipped with seat belts. These benefits provide a comfortable ride for the operator with less fatigue and improved operator satisfaction.
